The #10,000 grit Gokumyo Whetstone is classed as a Extremely Fine grade, and Suehiro's Ultimate Whetstone.
The “Suehiro Gokumyo Series” is made with Suehiro's unique combination of ultra-fine abrasives, and binders. Their fired ceramic whetstones, while taking full advantage of the properties of ultra-fine abrasives.
They overcome the drawbacks of conventional natural and resin based whetstones, which could lose their hardness due to temperature changes, or when immersed in water, and which could suffer surface degradation and cracking.
These high density ultra-fine fire-baked ceramic whetstones give the blades a very smooth, sharp edge, pushing the limit of what synthetic stones can give. Comes with a durable plastic whetstone rack and a whetstone surface restorer.
The abrasives have been enhanced from #13,000 (1.0 micron) to #20,000 (0.5 micron), resulting in a whetstone giving a smooth, superbly sharp edge, far exceeding the synthetic stones which came before.
Included with the stone is Suehiro's Dual Cleaner stone #400 grit, It will prep the surface for fine finishing.
The Suehiro Gokumyo series of stones will begin to develop a dish after frequent usage, to maintain the stones a lapping plate is recommended to keep the surface flat for long life.
We suggest either the Jende Industries Glass Lapping Plate, Shapton Diamond Glass Lapping Plate or the Shapton NAORU cast iron lapping system for this process.
This well-made whetstone has a dense concentration of ultra-fine air pockets and can be used immediately by lightly wetting it. Before using the whetstone, either briefly submerge it in water, or wet the surface with your hand, then begin sharpening.
Under normal circumstances (summer or winter temperature variations, immersion in water), there is no risk of a loss of quality. It can be used in the same manner as conventional (kiln-fired) whetstones.
